From the roar of packed arenas to the glow of giant screens and thousands of fans moving between matches, Riyadh has become synonymous with the world of competitive e-gaming. The Esports World Cup (EWC) is officially set to return to the Saudi capital in 2027.
The 2026 edition was relocated from Riyadh to Paris amid rising regional tensions in the region, marking the tournament’s first international stop since its launch in Saudi Arabia. The inaugural Esports World Cup launched in Riyadh in 2024, and served as the successor to the earlier Gamers8 e-gaming festival series. This move to Paris for the 2026 edition of the games was presented as part of the EWC’s wider global expansion, while organisers have continued to describe Riyadh as the tournament’s home.

This description is set to be solidified with the return of the Esports World Cup to the Kingdom for 2027. According to reports and announcements made to the media this week, the 2027 EWC is scheduled to run from July 16 to August 1, with Riyadh confirmed as the host city.
Counter-Strike 2 is already confirmed for the tournament, although the full gaming line-up, prize pool and wider programme have yet to be confirmed and announced. The two team, tactical first-person combat game was announced as the first official esports gaming title to be locked in for the 2027 tournament.
The return follows two landmark editions in Riyadh. The inaugural 2024 EWC brought together 1,500 athletes and 200 clubs from 100 countries, with competitions across 21 games and a $60 million prize pool. It also attracted 2.6 million visitors and more than 500 million online viewers. By 2025, the tournament had expanded to more than 2,000 players, 200 clubs and 24 games, with a record prize pool exceeding $70 million.
The 2027 return will therefore mark more than a homecoming. With Saudi Arabia continuing to build its position as a global gaming and esports hub, Riyadh is set to once again become the meeting point for the world’s leading players, clubs and gaming communities — this time with the EWC’s global ambitions firmly established.
