National Museum unveils rare Saudi coin collection

A new exhibition titled Minted Narratives: Saudi Arabia’s Legacy in Coins has opened at the National Museum in Riyadh, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the Kingdom’s history through the evolution of coinage.

Organised and curated by the Museums Commission, the exhibition runs until December 16, 2025, and features over 1,300 years of monetary heritage, this showcase explores the Kingdom's history with coinage, from pre-Islamic trade tokens to the modern Saudi Riyal.

The exhibition brings together a remarkable collection of rare coins, including selections from the personal archive of renowned collector Dr. Alain Baron, as well as pieces from the Ministry of Culture’s holdings. These coins are more than monetary artefacts; they serve as historical documents that reflect religious, cultural, and political shifts across centuries.

Structured around seven thematic sections, the exhibition begins with Pre-Islamic Coins, highlighting early symbols of trade and authority. It then moves through The Birth of Islamic Coins and Coins in Islamic Dynasties, illustrating the diversity and unity of Islamic civilisation. A dedicated section titled Women in Coins explores the representation of women in numismatic history, while Artisanal Coins delves into the craftsmanship and cultural significance behind minting practices.

One of the standout features is Treasures and Coins of Saudi Arabia, which traces the Kingdom’s journey from unification to modern statehood. The final section, The Coin That Was Never Minted, invites reflection on the symbolism and conceptual value of currency before it takes physical form.

Adding a contemporary layer, the exhibition includes installations by Swiss artist Zimoun, whose work interprets the visual language of money through sound and motion. These pieces bridge the gap between historical artefacts and modern artistic expression.

Minted Narratives aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, reinforcing the Kingdom’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage while fostering global dialogue. It’s a thoughtful blend of history, art, and education, inviting visitors to see coins not just as currency, but as storytellers of a nation’s journey.
