Aseer province is well-known among Saudis for having some of the Kingdom’s best hiking routes, but until recently, it hasn’t really been on the radar of international travellers. As a result, many of the most spectacular trails here are still quiet and feel thrillingly off-the-beaten track. There’s a great range of hikes in Aseer (also commonly called ‘Asir’), from wadis and mountains to misty walkways, and the region's cooler climate makes them even more of a pleasure to experience.

There are also widely varying difficulty levels, so those travelling with small children or less able to manage strenuous routes can still find accessible paths. So whether you're looking for a leisurely nature walk, a family-friendly outing or a challenging trek in Aseer National Park, Aseer has something for every level of adventurer.

With its mild climate, Aseer is one of the top places in Saudi Arabia for hiking year-round, but the best months are November to March when the weather is at its coolest. It’s worth remembering that temperatures can drop dramatically in the winter months, and some of the more challenging routes can include slippery rock climbs – pack accordingly and wear appropriate gear.

1. Jabal Soudah Trail

Distance varies depending on the trail; 2-6 hours; moderate

Jabal Soudah, standing at approximately 3,000 meters above sea level, is the highest peak in Saudi Arabia. It sits within Aseer National Park, which is a prime hiking and camping destination. Scenic trails wind through dense juniper forests, leading to panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. There are numerous routes up the mountain, and you can choose from several different elevation points to begin. One of the most established paths takes hikers upwards from the trailhead off Highway 214, which is near the Al Souda village area. Traders and villagers historically used this path, so it's well-trodden and easy to follow.

As you climb, you’ll notice the environment changing from dry and dusty to green and cool, with dense vegetation growing along the way, and increasingly dramatic views over the surrounding landscape. It’s not necessary to be an experienced climber for this route, but you will need a good level of fitness and decent footwear, as parts of the climb are challenging, with steep ascents and rocky pathways. There’s a paved road at the top, with a boulder right at the summit – while it might be very satisfying to reach it, most hikers agree this isn’t the most scenic or rewarding spot, so be sure to stop and admire the other viewpoints on the journey.

2. The Ridge Walk

2km round trip; 1 hour; easy

If you’re travelling with small kids but still want to ensure the whole family gets a classic Aseer hiking experience, try Tanomah’s Ridge Walk. This short route is easy and accessible, but still makes for a great family excursion with plenty of dramatic mountain scenery. The walk begins near the edge of Park Alheefah, and passes several viewpoints where everyone can admire Tanomah’s lush green slopes. Inclines are gentle and there is plenty of wildlife to discover along the way – little ones are bound to be delighted if they spot the baboons or geckos that live in the area.

3. The Fog Walkway

7 km; 2 hours; easy

One of the most stunning and accessible walking trails in Abha is the Fog Walkway, a long, level route that allows visitors to walk among the clouds. Located in the Al Dabab neighbourhood, this trail offers breathtaking views of the Tihama Mountains, often enveloped in mist. The experience can be quite surreal, with views changing minute by minute as the clouds move, making it a favourite spot for photographers. The Fog Walkway is well-maintained and features seating areas, green spaces, and even playgrounds for children. It's an excellent choice for families or anyone who prefers a relaxed and scenic walk rather than a strenuous hike.

4. Tanomah Mountain Trails

2-5km; 2-4 hours; moderate-difficult

Situated along the slopes of the Sarawat Mountains, Tanomah is one of the highest cities in Saudi Arabia and offers diverse hiking opportunities. With its rugged peaks, dense juniper forests and rich biodiversity, Tanomah is an excellent spot for hikers who want to get off the beaten track. For those who prefer to hike with a guide, local tour company Husaak Adventures offers two contrasting hikes, ‘Mommah’ and ‘Manaa’, that make the most of the area.

Mommah is a steep, 2km climb across rocky terrain that rewards trekkers with a head-turning 270-degree view over the Tihama mountains. The Manaa hike is a little more challenging, a 5km trail that starts on a mountaintop before winding down to the valley below. The route will take you over large boulders, past wadis and into green valleys – make sure to admire the fascinating rock formations along the route.

5. Jabal Abyad

4km; 4 hours; moderate-difficult

Jabal Abyad, or ‘White Mountain’, is a volcanic peak near Bisha, and its dazzling, white quartz rock formations are a stark contrast with the green slopes of Jabal Soudah and Tanomah. This hike requires a lot of scrambling, with loose rubble to navigate, but is worth the effort once you reach the summit.

Expect breathtaking views of surrounding peaks, sandscapes and the odd camel.  If you climb Jabal Abyad in the afternoon, you might just make the top in time for sunset, when the quartz on the mountainside glows in the changing light. Jabal Abyad is illuminated on the west side by night, making it a striking sight after dark.
