When is the best time to visit Aseer?

Aseer is a great year-round destination, with different seasons offering refreshingly cool weather, festivals, sunshine and outdoor fun.

The good news is, any time of year is great for visiting Aseer. Unlike the rest of Saudi Arabia, which experiences high temperatures during the summer months, Aseer (Asir) has remarkably comfortable weather year-round. The region’s capital, Abha, has a semi-arid climate and an elevation of about 2,200m, giving it a very comfortable spring and autumn, and no extreme highs or lows.

So while the weather can be one factor in deciding when to go, there are far more fun things to consider – when to see the jacarandas bloom, which festivals to attend and the coolest times to explore the misty mountains. These are the best times to visit Aseer.

When is the best time for outdoor activities in Aseer?

November to March is the time to visit Aseer if you want to enjoy the great outdoors. One of Aseer’s biggest draws is its mountains, so most adventurers are looking for the coolest weather to enjoy their hikes, picnics and cycling tours. The winter in Aseer is perfect for outdoor activities as you can expect bright sunny days, with the average high a comfortable 20°C – ideal for strolling through mountain villages or working up a sweat ascending the Sarawat Mountain Peaks. If you’re camping overnight, choose the warmer months of this season (November and March), as nights can get surprisingly cool, with temperatures in the highlands dropping below freezing on the coldest nights.

Pros: The scenery is at its best and the weather is comfortable enough to jog, hike or cycle.

Cons: If you’re looking for hot ‘winter sun’ weather, you’ll need to go elsewhere.

When is the best time for a summer escape and festival fun?

From July to September, tourists flock to Aseer to savour the fresh mountain breezes and weather that’s truly blissful compared to the rest of the Middle East. It’s rarely hotter than 30°C during the day, with much cooler temperatures in the evening, and in the mountain peaks. Summers in Aseer are a welcome respite from the heat experienced across the rest of the country.

This is also the prime festival season. Aseer Season, an annual program of music, entertainment, sports and culture events takes place across the summer months. Big-name concerts and events are held in Abha and various other locations across the region. It’s a particularly great time to travel as a family as there are usually plenty of great kids' activities included in the line-up.

The famous Flowerman Festival also takes place in September in the heritage village of Rijal Almaa. This is a vibrant showcase of traditional Aseeri clothing, dance and folk traditions. The ‘Flower Men’ are from the local Qahtani tribe, and wear distinctive floral crowns.

Pros: There are so many cultural activities to get involved in, and a lively atmosphere.

Cons: As this is a popular time to visit, expect crowds and higher prices.

When is the best time to see Abha’s jacarandas bloom?

April and May are shoulder season in Aseer. Temperatures climb gradually to the mid-twenties and there’s some light rainfall, especially in May. But don’t let that put you off, as there’s a brilliant reason to choose exactly this period for a trip to Abha – jacaranda season. Across the whole of Aseer, but particularly in Abha, jacaranda trees burst into fabulous purple bloom, typically from mid-April to the end of May. There are around 15,000 jacaranda trees across the province, and they’re usually at their most impressive in the first two weeks of May. The best places to see the blossoms are Art Street, Abu Kheyal Park and Andalus Park.

Pros: There are few crowds at this time, but the weather is balmy and the scenery wonderful. Prices tend to be cheaper.

Cons: Light rain can interrupt your outdoor excursions.

When is the best time to avoid the crowds in Aseer?

October is a transitional month weather-wise for Aseer, with falling temperatures and a little rainfall. It’s also the sunniest month of the year. This is a great time to come if your itinerary is flexible, so you can spend the most pleasant days outdoors, and the rest of the time exploring castles, museums, galleries and cultural venues. This is a quiet time for tourism, so you can also take advantage of the peace in normally crowded hotspots. Why not take a solo trip? Aseer is a popular spot for solo women travellers due to the warm welcome everyone receives from the friendly locals.

Pros: No crowds and plenty of sunshine.

Cons: Less buzz and events than at other times of the year.

Religious holidays: Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha

Ramadan is the most spiritual time of the year for Muslims – a holy month of fasting, gatherings and prayers. It follows the Islamic lunar calendar, so falls on different dates each year (in 2026, Ramadan will be from mid-February to mid-March). For travellers who don’t practice, this can be a tricky time to visit, as businesses and attractions are often closed and it’s not permitted to eat or drink in public during the day.

Iftar meals to break the fast are upbeat, festive events, with invites often extended to non-Muslims and there’s also a strong feeling of community and kindness throughout the month. The end of Ramadan is marked by Eid al-Fitr, which is a great time to be here for festivities and celebrations, although hotels and restaurants will be more crowded than usual. The same is true for Saudi’s other major holiday, Eid al-Adha, which takes place over three to four days (May 26-30 in 2026). Early bookings are essential during these periods.
