What You Need to Know

A peninsula country extending into the Arabian Gulf, Qatar has been long shaped by its Bedouin heritage and historic ties to ancient Mesopotamia. Today, the nations has evolved into a thriving modern tourism hub, seamlessly blending tradition with innovation - from its architecture to its museums,

Since the opening of the award-winning Hamad International Airport in 2014, the Gulf country has become a pivotal mid-way point for both tourism and commercial travel, a global gateway connecting East and West. With its world-class infrastructure, luxurious resorts, and rich cultural heritage, Qatar has positioned itself as a leading destination for travellers seeking both tradition and modernity. From its bustling souks to futuristic skyline, the country seamlessly blends its deep-rooted history with cutting-edge innovation, making it a must-visit stop in the Arabian Gulf.

Qatar Museums was founded by the government in 2005, and since has brought the public closer to art, transforming museum visits from something reserved for the elite into a cultural experience embraced by all segments of society, including families. A visit to the Museum of Islamic Art, for example, is enough to witness the city’s deep-rooted appreciation for artistic movements firsthand.

By reimagining museums beyond their traditional roles, turning them into lively, guest-friendly destinations that blend art with dining and immersive experiences,. These museums have been designed to be vibrant spaces pulsing with culture, entertainment, and creativity. But it doesn't end at museum gates — the artistic spirit spills into public squares, parks, and various outdoor areas. Artworks are scattered throughout Doha, and even beyond the city limits, you’ll find installations deep in the Qatari desert. One such piece is by artist Olafur Eliasson, installed in the heritage site of Ain Mohammed, and another by American artist Richard Serra, located in the desert landscape of Zekreet.

Believe it or not, this contemporary art museum once served as Doha’s central fire station, originally built in 1982. In 2014, Qatari architect Ibrahim Jaidah transformed the site into a thriving hub for modern art—the Fire Station Museum—while preserving the architectural character of the original firehouse.

A highlight of the museum is Tasweer – Qatar Photo Festival, a vibrant showcase of photography featuring talents from Qatar and around the world. Among the standout works are pieces by Saudi artists Moath Alofi and Manal AlDowayan, alongside an impressive lineup of international photographers.

Football fans should make time for the After the Game exhibition, which documents the emotional journey of the 2022 FIFA World Cup through the eyes of photographers and filmmakers. The exhibit captures powerful human moments—from joy to heartbreak to triumph—offering a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse of a global event.

But that’s not all — the Fire Station Museum is also home to a rotating calendar of exhibitions that are definitely worth exploring, including As I Lay Between Two Seas, The Mihrab, and many more. You’ll likely need several hours to take it all in and explore the museum’s rich artistic layers.

The Museum of Islamic Art is a must-visit on your next trip to Doha.

Skipping this architectural masterpiece would mean missing out on a rare chance to explore centuries-old artefacts, with each exhibit carefully curated, showcasing an ancient collection, from royal treasuries to normal people everyday collections.

The museum’s permanent collection includes manuscripts, intricately carved woodwork, rare ceramics, textiles, gemstones, and many other remarkable objects that together tell the rich story of Islamic art and culture.

Feeling like a living history book, the Museum of Islamic Art was designed by the late, legendary Chinese-American architect Ieoh Ming Pei, known more commonly as I.M. Pei. The well-respected and international renowned architect was involved in every step, carefully choosing its location and positioning to offer visitors a sweeping view of Doha’s wondrous waterfront, and an entirely man-made island - Pearl Island - was constructed to house this iconic building at the heart of the city.

The National Museum of Qatar

When French architect Jean Nouvel set out to design the National Museum of Qatar, he envisioned a structure that would reflect the country’s heritage and geological landscape — he called it a “desert rose.” The result is a breathtaking building where the art of architecture comes alive at every step. With expansive outdoor spaces and sweeping sea views, this architectural marvel has become a landmark in Doha’s evolving skyline.

One of the museum’s most remarkable features is its integration of a historic site: the former palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani, who ruled Qatar from 1913 to 1949. As part of your visit, you can walk through this restored palace and immerse yourself in a key chapter of Qatari history. Recently, both the palace and the National Museum have been added to UNESCO’s tentative list for World Heritage status.

If you're in Qatar before July 19, 2025, don’t miss the Latino Americano exhibition, the first major showcase of Latin American modern and contemporary art in West Asia and North Africa. This expansive exhibition offers a deep look into the richness and complexity of Latin American culture, presenting 170 works by over 100 artists from across the continent. At its core lies a powerful question: How can a collection of images represent the vast diversity of an entire continent? The exhibit explores this through a wide spectrum of perspectives and artistic voices.

For those intrigued by the art of design, make your way to the Ultraleggera exhibition — an immersive journey into the creative world of Italian designer Marcello Gandini, the mastermind behind iconic sports cars such as the Lamborghini Miura and the Lancia Stratos. The exhibit explores key milestones in Gandini’s career and how he revolutionised the automotive design industry; it runs until June 2.

And if you're a car enthusiast, there’s even more to explore. Head over to the Qatar Auto Museum Project within the National Museum and take a close-up look at legendary classic cars. One highlight is a fully transparent 1940 Pontiac, offering a rare view of the engine and inner mechanics of this timeless machine. This unique display will be open until January 2, 2026.
