The bling city of Dubai is a haven for beauty-lovers and pamper queens everywhere, so it’s no surprise that there are some seriously good hairdressers here. From the very bougie to the achingly hip, there are vibes and styles to suit every customer – and you’ll find all the usual suspects here in terms of hair treatments (as well as some more cutting edge techniques).
What may surprise you, however, is the price. Unlike other buzzing cities, a haircut or colour in Dubai won’t break your budget (and shorter treatments such as blow-outs are so reasonable it’s a wonder anyone here owns their own hairdryer). These are our favourite hair salons in Dubai.
1. Maria Dowling
Maria Dowling has been on the hair scene in the region since 2002, and remains a firm Dubai favourite for hair colour (not for nothing is she referred to as the ‘queen of colour’). The salon also aims to be a fun destination for clients, so expect hairdressers who listen to your requests and take the time to talk you through potential colour and style changes. As well as the rundown of colour services (highlights, balayage etc), there are also treatments including olaplex, scalp detox and keratin treatments (they’re expensive but won’t break the bank). The salon, on the ground floor of the Al Meena Building, has a spacious, art-deco feel and is a most relaxing place to spend a few hours.
2. Chalk
This edgy hair salon and nail bar located in Al Quoz described itself as a place “for rebels, creative thinkers, and disruptors”. Even the website is achingly hip. But they have the goods to back it up too – you’ll find services dedicated to repairing damaged hair and scalps, as well as creative up-dos, bridal services, braids, cornrows, and various colour stations. Treatments are very reasonably priced (although several services, like extensions, are price-on-request). There’s a minimalist aesthetic in the salon, as well as a brilliant booth with a 360-degree mirror to capture your perfect ‘do from all angles.
3. That Hair Tho
A fun, funky salon whose USP is cruelty-free products, but this isn’t your usual eco-friendly business. You won’t find bland colours or drab design here, it’s all about fresh pops of colour and creating an atmosphere where you leave feeling great (the decent treatments obviously help). Pick from a vegan smorgasbord of colour treatments (from babylights and root smudges to face-framing highlights) and repair products – the Malibu makeover treatment for dry/damaged hair is the perfect antidote to the Dubai weather. Prices range from the rather cheap (AED 139 for toner) to the slightly more eye-watering (AED 1,329 for air-touch highlights).
4. Akin
Why should the women have all the fun? One for the men, this barbershop is a slick operation offering stylish cuts and beard trims in understated, cool surrounds. Treatments include facials, beard sculpting and colour, as well as purifying scalp treatments, keratin boosters and a caffeine treatment for hair-loss. Many of the staff seem to have signed some kind of trendy moustache pact and they’re happy to advise on all your facial hair questions and concerns. 5. The Nest
This upmarket, chic salon is all clean lines and understated elegance. You’ll find services from nails to brows and lashes here as well, so it’s great if you’re looking for a head-to-toe makeover, but the hair is the star. Book in for a free colour consultation to discuss changing your look and stay for the excellent service and relaxing vibes. You’ll also find keratin treatments, hair extensions and ‘hair rituals’ that will restore your locks to their very best. Our favourite part? The salon offers silent appointments – perfect if you don’t want to make small talk after a busy day. Now that’s bliss.
6. Lunatic Fringe
This hair and beauty spot is the perfect place to get pampered, boasting treatments from nail services and facials to top-quality haircare. Set in Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort & Spa, this place is pure luxury - from the chandeliers and gold art deco lighting to the pretty pink tiling round the bar and the flower arches. Treatments here are on the slightly more expensive side (From AED 625 for highlights) but are not unreasonable given the service and surrounds. Book in for a blow-out, they’re among the best in town.
7. Sota
As well as the usual roster of hair and beauty treatments (see hair colouring, scalp treatments, facials and massages), Sota is the go-to for hair extensions, from nano beads to weaves. If you're looking to give your hair a little extra length or volume, this is the place to be. The atmosphere is friendly and the stylists experienced, while the decor is clean and natural – think white walls with touches of greenery around the place. You’re sure to leave this place feeling relaxed and looking head-to-toe glam.
