Aseer is a naturally stunning region in southwestern Saudi Arabia.
Once a not-so-secret hidden gem vacation destination loved by locals, the region is quickly emerging as a major tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world. The Saudi government continues to heavily invest in developing Aseer's tourism infrastructure, including building new hotels, resorts, and enhancing transportation links. This investment, coupled with the region's natural beauty and cultural heritage, will position Aseer as a must-visit destination for both local and international travellers seeking a unique and authentic experience.
Already offering visitors incredible beauty and charm with its awe-inspiring landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and pleasant climate, future plans for Aseer will ensure that the region offers visitors a unique and unforgettable experience.
Aseer's Exciting Development Plans
To further enhance its tourism offerings, Aseer has identified four key development areas for Aseer:
Emerald Peaks
Destined to be one of the region's most stunning areas, Emerald Peaks will be characterised by lush mountains and a enjoyable, cool climate - even during the summer months. Set to be ideal for lovers of the outdoors, Emerald Peaks will invite visitors to embark on thrilling outdoor adventures such as hiking, camping, and rock climbing.
Adding a dash of cultural authenticity to the unending wilds of the Aseer mountains, the charming towns of Al-Namas and Khamis Mushait will offer visitors a glimpse into the region's rich history and culture.
Living Legacy
Aseer's rich history and cultural heritage will showcased in the Living Legacy development as part of the investment into the region. Visitors will be able to experience and explore ancient villages, admire traditional architecture, and witness local artisans at work. A number of key attractions of the Living Legacy development plans will include the impressive Rijal Al-Ma'a, which is already a UNESCO World Heritage Site, alongside the historic city of Abha.
Desert Getaway
For those seeking a more adventurous experience, the desert region of Aseer is set to be a tourist destination for a variety of thrilling and sandy desert activities. Visitors will be able to discover the thrills of the desert whilst on dune bashing adventures, and meet the 'ships of the desert' in experiential camel safaris, and of course, what would a visit to the desert be without a guided stargazing expedition?
The Blue Coast
Planned to be the perfect destination for relaxation and water sports, The Blue Coast, with its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters, will invite visitors to experience a new and under explored side to Saudi. Visitors to The Blue Coast will be able to enjoy the incredible array of fish and sea creatures whilst swimming and snorkelling in the clear waters. For those looking to go deeper into the blue, a specialised diving centre and school is set to open.
The Blue Coast's waterfront city of Al Hareedah offers a wide range of dining, shopping, and entertainment options.
Awakening the Wonder of Aseer
During the first 9 months of 2024, Aseer attracted over 6 million visitors to the region. In addition to being home to some of the Kingdom's highest peaks, with more than 125 kilometres of coastline, over 4000 culturally important buildings and heritage villages, Aseer is a thriving destination for local and international tourism. It is expected that by the end of 2024, more than 8 million visitors will have experienced the Aseer region.
Showcasing the best of the region on an international stage, the Aseer Development Authority (ASDA) held court at London's World Travel Market (WTM) in early November. A convergence of international travel experts, investors and global governmental tourism bodies, in addition to international media, the WTM was the perfect opportunity to introduce the world to the natural and varied beauty of Aseer.
"Aseer boasts a natural and cultural diversity that will strengthen its tourism appeal, offering visitors distinctive landscapes with mountain peaks, expansive desert and coastal shores,” Al-Harbi said. "The region’s year-round pleasant climate and centuries-old history come alive through archaeological sites and ancient rock inscriptions spread throughout, embodying an authentic culture preserved across generations. Visitors can explore the roots of the region’s history and enjoy our vibrant cuisine, while experiencing the warmth of Aseeri hospitality. We are Awakening Wonder."
