Saudi travel writer Donna AlSudairi takes us with her on a journey through Switzerland, with her first stop being Geneva.
Switzerland's Geneva is a cosmopolitan city known for its stunning natural beauty, rich history, and international significance.
Visiting the Swiss city from the Kingdom's capital city of Riyadh is easier than ever with Saudia now operating three weekly, direct flights connecting the two cities. The direct flight takes 6 hours, and flight operates on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with prices starting from SAR1550.
A Saudi's Guide to Geneva
Perched on the shores of Lake Geneva, the city has breathtaking views of the Alps and offers a sophisticated lifestyle and ambiance. Switzerland's second-largest city and the birthplace of watchmaking, Geneva is home to prestigious names like Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin.
With a vibrant cultural scene, excellent dining options, and a rich cultural heritage that is still evident today throughout the city, Geneva is a destination that might not have been on your radar before - but should be.
Where to Stay
Mandarin Oriental, Geneva
Located on a tranquil street along the Rhône River, Mandarin Oriental, Geneva is just a five-minute walk from the Old Town and Geneva's top shopping destination, Rue du Rhône, making it a perfect base for your stay.
Originally opened in the 1950s as Europe’s first post-second world war hotel, it retains its iconic art deco style, with original woodwork and finishes reflecting timeless elegance. The interiors feature rich turquoise and smoky browns, inspired by the Rhône, with the bas-relief artworks depicting the river’s journey.
There are 178 renovated rooms, including spacious entry-level rooms and four luxurious Signature Suites with private terraces, fireplaces, and kitchens – ideal for extended family stays.
My Mandarin River View Room had decor beautifully blending the feel of the surrounding mountains with the peaceful river waves. My favourite details included the customisable minibar, the delicious alcohol-free champagne, and a jogging map.
After a day exploring, unwind at the hotel’s wellness facilities. Treat yourself to a custom beauty session at Les Suites Beauté by Bellefontaine or relax with a private yoga class. The hammam and sauna offer a peaceful escape, while seasonal wellness programmes provide a refreshing twist to your routine.
With Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s single-use plastics ban, my dental kit had a wooden toothbrush and bio-degradable toothpaste packet. Plus, this year the hotel started utilising Lake Geneva’s water to power its cooling system through underground pipelines.
