Saudi's tourism boom drives demand for licensed tour guides

In the last number of years, Saudi Arabia has witnessed and continues to experience a significant surge in tourism.

As the Kingdom continues to heavily invest in its tourism sector, the demand for qualified tour guides is expected to further increase. By providing well-trained guides, Saudi Arabia aims to enhance the visitor experience and promote its rich cultural heritage.

Saudi's Tourism Boom

In September of this year, it was reported that the Kingdom's thriving tourism sector saw a remarkable 73% increase in international tourist arrivals, and a staggering 207% growth in international tourism revenues, according to the World Tourism Barometer by UN Tourism.

More than 120 million tourists visited Saudi Arabia in 2023, and in the first seven months of 2024 alone, the number of international tourists touching down in the Kingdom reached an impressive 17.5 million. In addition to these impressive stats, Riyadh Season 2024 has seen a growing number of visitors, with a reported 2 million visitors visiting in the first week alone.  This surge only lends to further solidify Saudi Arabia as a top tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the globe.

In November, the Ministry of Tourism announced that Riyadh's 5-star hotels had achieved an impressive 97% occupancy rate. Almost unheard of in any nation's hospitality sector, the city's hotel and apartment occupancy surpassed 90%, a testament to the city's thriving tourism scene.

And this ripple of the tourism boom has extended beyond visitors, as the Ministry of Tourism has unveiled a massive increase in the number of accredited tourism guide licenses. The Kingdom's tourism scene has see a 121% increase in guide licenses the first nine months of 2024, when compared to the same period last year.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, the number of licensed tour guides has exceeded 2,500, highlighting the growing demand for qualified professionals in the country's burgeoning tourism sector.

The Ministry has also reported a 49% increase in the number of travel and tourism service licenses, reaching over 2,600. This surge is attributed to the government's efforts to streamline the licensing process and create a conducive environment for industry growth.

By investing in the development of its tourism infrastructure and promoting the Kingdom's rich cultural heritage, Saudi Arabia aims to attract more international visitors and enhance the overall tourist experience. The increased number of licensed tour guides will play a crucial role in showcasing the country's diverse attractions and providing visitors with informative and engaging experiences.
