Located in the northwest of Saudi Arabia, Tabuk is an ancient region steeped in historical significance, breathtaking natural landscapes and also home to the upcoming futuristic city of Neom. We’ve got everything you need to know about navigating this fascinating province without losing your cool.
Arriving in Tabuk
Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Airport, also known as Tabuk International Airport, is the region’s main transport hub. Exclusively a military airport until a major renovation in 2011, it connects the city to other destinations in Saudi Arabia, as well as a few international destinations such as Doha, Dubai and Cairo. From the airport, it’s just a ten-minute car ride to Tabuk City.
If you’re already in the region, consider a road trip to Tabuk. Most of the highways are robust and provide links to other major cities in the Kingdom. Take your time and enjoy a scenic route past ancient rock formations and long stretches of pristine coastline. Arriving by car in Tabuk is perhaps the best way to appreciate the breathtaking variety of nature the region has to offer.
If you’re travelling around Saudi on a budget, take the bus from other cities in the Kingdom. There’s a direct bus route from Jeddah to Tabuk that takes 15 hours and is reasonably priced at SAR 237 per adult or at SAR 402 for the VIP fare. The coach is comfortable and well-equipped, and makes several stops along the way to allow travellers to stretch and refresh.
Public transport in Tabuk City
Make the most of your travel budget in Tabuk by making use of the public bus network that connects all the city’s major districts as well as tourist attractions. In 2024, the Saudi Public Transport Company (SAPTCO), a publicly owned transport company, announced Tabuk’s electric bus project featuring eco-friendly vehicles to support Vision 2030’s sustainability goals.
Taxis are available throughout the city, and ride-hailing services like Careem, Uber and Bolt provide a more comfortable way to travel if you’ve got the budget.
Northwest Bus, considered the crown jewel of intercity travel in Saudi, provides assistance for travellers with mobility issues. For those traveling with small children in strollers, buses and taxis are both a good option. At the end of 2023, Saudi issued a new rule requiring passengers on public buses to yield their seats to families with children. Another option is to rent a car to get around the city and surrounding area, which is especially useful if you’re travelling in a group and hoping to explore the wild landscapes of Tabuk.
For shorter distances within the city, cycle rickshaws and small minivans are a common sight and provide fun and economical options.
Explore Tabuk City on foot
A great way to get to know the city and explore various museums, mosques and other modern and historic sites is by exploring on foot. From visiting authentic mud houses and traditional souqs such as Twaheen Souq in the Old Quarter, plotting your own course means you truly get a feel for the buzz of Tabuk and the local culture. Visitors can also book full-day walking tours with a guide to help make the most of limited time in the area.
Travelling outside Tabuk
The region outside of Tabuk has numerous sites and stunning landscapes to visit. From the futuristic marvel of NEOM to the breathtaking mountainous area of Wadi Al Disah, coastal cities like Duba on the Red Sea Coast and much more, it’s worth hiring a car or joining a tour to see everything it has to offer.
