Stunning rock formations and sandy dunes give way to verdant oases and beautiful lakes in the northeastern region of Tabuk – you can find beauty everywhere, from the middle of the city to the farthest corners of the landscape. It’s all about knowing where to look. Wander through lush valleys and ancient desert cities or stroll along easy trails suitable for every age with our round-up of the most beautiful spots in the region of Tabuk.
1. Wadi Al Disah
Rising out from the stacked rocks and dust like a true desert oasis, Wadi Al Disah is not to be missed. A verdant valley filled with palm trees, grassland and water-filled crevices that look like a scene from Jurassic Park (don’t worry, there are no dinosaurs). Here you can explore the area by car (you’ll need a 4x4), hike the surrounding rocky terrain or simply enjoy a picnic in the lush surroundings.
2. The ruins at Madyan
A stunning site that’s perfect for history buffs, the ruins at Madyan (also known as Madyan Shuaib) offer a glimpse into the past with structures that date back to 2000 BCE. Here you’ll find houses cut into the rocks with beautiful facades, as well as a museum explaining the history of the area. The caves and houses here have been left uninhabited for many years – according to the Qur'an, the people who lived here were killed by an earthquake and the site has not been lived in since.
3. Red Dunes
A stunning hike or picnic spot, these towering deep-red sand dunes in the desert are well worth a visit. Get ready to take some postcard-perfect pictures of the Kingdom and you’ll also find plenty of opportunities for adrenaline-based adventures while enjoying the view. Try nail-biting dune-bashing in a 4x4 or take the wheel with a spin in your own dune buggy (you can find rentals or take tours of the Red Dunes that include adventure travel).
4. Raes Lake
Very close to Tabuk City (about a 20-minute drive) you’ll find Raes Lake (also known as Rays Lake), which is the perfect spot for nature lovers. The beautiful oasis is ripe for hikes and exploring among the local vegetation, with bird-watching a particular highlight. It’s also a beautiful spot to bring the whole family, provided your small people are big enough to stay safe around the water. Pack a picnic and hang around for the sunset – the shimmering waters reflect the fiery sky and it’s breathtaking.
5. Rose farms in Tabuk
Tabuk is renowned for its rose farms, producing more than 28 million roses per year. The best part is that the farms are open to visitors and make for a stunning sight. Photographers (and those stocking up on impressive pics for the gram) will be in heaven here as rows upon rows of fragrant blooms are on display. You can also shop for local rose-infused products including rose water and perfume.
6. Greenland Park
Greenland Park is a pretty little spot in Tabuk City for those in search of a pleasant place to walk and sit outdoors without leaving the city limits. Part of the zoo (which is a great spot to take young children), the park is dotted with palm trees, accessible paths and a play area for children. In the zoo itself you’ll spot birds of paradise, reptiles and mammals – kids love the feeding and educational sessions where you can learn more about the animals.
