British explorer and television presenter Alice Morrison is preparing for an unprecedented adventure, aiming to become the first person to walk the entire length of Saudi Arabia from north to south. Starting on January 1, 2025, Morrison's ambitious five-month expedition will cover an impressive 2,500 kilometers across diverse Saudi landscapes, from vast deserts and lush oases to towering mountains.
Alice Morrison's journey is driven by a few factors: discovering and documenting new landmarks, highlighting the influential role of Saudi women in society, and showcasing the natural beauty of the landscape along with the Kingdom’s conservation efforts. By retracing the paths once traveled by ancient caravans, Morrison seeks to shed light on the rich historical narratives that have shaped the region and offer a fresh perspective on a Saudi Arabia that is rapidly modernizing and developing.
A significant aspect of Morrison’s expedition is her focus on the lives and contributions of Saudi women. She plans to spend time interacting with local women, sharing their stories and experiences while aiming to provide a deeper understanding of their roles in Saudi society and reflect the diverse aspirations within their communities.
One of the major highlights of Morrison’s route will be AlUla, which Morrison has previously explored in her series, “Arabian Adventures: The Secrets of the Nabateans.”
Reflecting on her upcoming journey, Morrison shared: “I have been studying Arabic and the Middle East for 45 years. Now, I get to explore the heart of Arabia.” She also noted the personal significance of undertaking such a journey at the age of 61, emphasizing that the life experience she has gained over the years has prepared her for this moment. Her journey is not just a personal challenge but a message of inspiration, encouraging others to pursue their dreams regardless of age.
Morrison also plans to observe and record the impacts of climate change along her route, acknowledging the harsh realities of the desert environment. “The desert is a harsh mistress, and I am sure she will be teaching me many lessons along the route,” she remarked.
As Saudi Arabia continues to open up to recreational and exploratory tourism, Alice Morrison’s solo trek will highlight the nation as a destination for unique and meaningful adventures. Her journey promises to be a profound exploration of the natural and cultural landscapes of Saudi Arabia, documented and shared with a global audience.
