Bhutan's new "mindfulness airport" will eliminate travel stress

In a bold move that blends architectural ingenuity with the nation's ethos of "Gross National Happiness," Bhutan is set to redefine travel with the development of the Gelephu Mindfulness City and its centrepiece, the new Gelephu International Airport.

Found in the southern region of Bhutan, close to the Indian border, this ambitious project aims to create a sanctuary of well-being, starting with the very first and last impression visitors receive: the airport.

Architectural firm BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group has unveiled designs that seamlessly integrate the airport with the surrounding natural landscape, embodying Bhutan's commitment to mindfulness. The renderings showcase a series of modular, wooden diamond-shaped structures, reflecting the country's mountainous terrain, whilst also allowing for future expansion of the building.

Aiming to blend Bhutanese heritage with sustainability and innovative travel, the airport's design prioritises natural elements and aims to create a tranquil atmosphere, a stark contrast to the often-stressful experience of modern air travel. It is planned that the structure will be made using locally sourced timber, and incorporate traditional Bhutanese wood carvings.

"An airport is the first and last impression you get of a place you visit," Ingels states, emphasising the importance of creating a welcoming and serene environment. The design incorporates traditional Bhutanese craft, with mass timber frames carved and coloured to depict the nation's past, present, and future through symbolic dragon designs. Rooftop solar panels will power the carbon-negative airport, aligning with Bhutan's dedication to environmental sustainability.

Gelephu International Airport will span almost 732,000 square feet, and it is expected the international airport will be in a position to accommodate up to 123 flights a day, and service up to 1.3 million passengers annually.

This new opening, slated for 2029, marks a significant expansion for Bhutan, which currently relies on the challenging Paro International Airport. Gelephu's flatter terrain and strategic location close to the Indian border will enable the airport to handle larger aircraft and facilitate stronger trade and diplomatic ties.

Spearheaded by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the Gelephu Mindfulness City project is envisioned as a business hub and a vital lifeline for the landlocked nation. The airport's development underscores Bhutan's commitment to "high value, low impact" tourism, a philosophy that prioritises sustainable development and cultural preservation. Visitors will continue to contribute to the nation's well-being through a daily sustainable development fee, supporting essential public services.

The Gelephu International Airport represents a groundbreaking step in Bhutan's journey towards creating a harmonious and mindful future.
