Almost 2 million people used the Riyadh Metro in its first week of operation

The Riyadh Metro, a multi-billion-dollar project, officially commenced operations on December 1, 2024.

In its first week of operation, the Riyadh Metro has already garnered significant popularity, attracting over 1.9 million passengers, with the Purple Line emerging as the most favoured route among commuters. The system is designed to accommodate a daily ridership of 1.2 million passengers, with the capacity to scale up to 3.6 million upon the opening of all stations and lines, a step which will lead to a significant reduction in traffic congestion, and reliance on private vehicles.

Said to be the longest, driverless metro system in the world, the Riyadh Metro is a state-of-the-art transportation network that spans more than 176 kilometres and comprises six colour-coded lines with 85 stations. Said to have cost $22.5 billion to build, the capital's newest public transport system is powered by 183 driverless train carts which have been manufactured by technology industry leaders Siemens, Bombardier, and Alstom.

The Riyadh Metro is a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, a transformative plan aimed at diversifying the economy and improving the quality of life for its citizens. As Riyadh's population is projected to grow to 15-20 million by 2030, the metro system will play a crucial role in accommodating this rapid urbanisation.

The network will be launched in phases, with the Blue, Yellow, and Purple Lines already operational. The Red and Green Lines are scheduled to commence operations on December 15, followed by the Orange Line on January 5.

Riyadh Metro Expansion

It was also announced this week by Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Investment Khalid A. Al-Falih and Mohammed AlQahtani, CEO of Saudi Arabia Holding Co. that there are now plans to introduce a seventh line to the Riyadh Metro. With a further $21 billion is expected to be allocated to this enhanced expansion of the metro system, this new line, spanning approximately 65 kilometres, will feature 19 state-of-the-art stations, 14 underground and 5 above ground. It will connect key landmarks and emerging mega-developments such as Qiddiya Entertainment City, King Abdullah International Gardens, King Salman Park, New Murabba, Misk City, and Diriyah Gate.

With its efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly transportation, the Riyadh Metro is set to revolutionise urban mobility in Saudi Arabia and position the Kingdom as a global leader in sustainable development.
