Electric air taxis to transport Red Sea guests from next year

The pristine coastline of Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea is slated to become one of the world’s first hubs for commercial electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft; the region's Maldives-inspired sea planes are set to be replaced with electric aircraft.

Last week at the Dubai Airshow, US-based aviation pioneer Archer Aviation has confirmed plans to launch air taxi services at the ambitious Red Sea Global (RSG) luxury tourism destinations starting as early as next year. And following suit, US-based Joby Aviation secured a key agreement with Red Sea Global and The Helicopter Company (THC) during the same event. As part of this partnership, the electric air taxi manufacturer plans to initiate pre-commercial evaluation flights in Saudi Arabia within the first half of 2026.

This lower-impact initiative is a critical component of Red Sea Global’s commitment to running its resorts with a low-carbon footprint while providing ultra-premium mobility for its guests. The electric vehicles will be quieter in operation, reducing noise pollution, and will have lower emissions than the seaplanes currently in use. This news highlights the Kingdom’s direct investment in high-tech, environmentally conscious infrastructure.

By replacing combustion engine-powered vehicles with battery-electric aircraft, the project aligns perfectly with RSG’s goal of making its massive coastal developments — including The Red Sea and AMAALA — globally recognised beacons for regenerative tourism.

The operation will utilise Archer’s Midnight aircraft, an advanced, four-passenger, electric vehicle designed for safe, quick, and quiet short-haul flights. The fleet will serve as a sustainable solution for transporting guests from the region’s main airports directly to their private islands and inter-resort locations, bypassing traditional road or water transfers.

Red Sea Global & Vision 2030 - Reducing Emissions & Increasing Tourism Access

This move marks a massive step for the future of urban and resort mobility globally. For Saudi Arabia, the rapid integration of eVTOL technology is a clear demonstration of the Vision 2030 framework, which champions technological innovation and economic diversification. The establishment of this electric aviation network will significantly enhance the efficiency and exclusivity of the guest experience, offering seamless, elevated travel across the Kingdom's burgeoning western coast.

Ultimately, these partnership agreements between Archer, Joby Aviation and RSG respectively, are not just about transportation; it is about establishing a new standard for sustainable luxury travel. The launch of these electric air taxis will position the Red Sea region at the forefront of the global movement toward silent, all-electric aviation.
