The Holy Month of Ramadan is expected to begin on Monday March 11, and with this in mind the Ministry of Culture (MoC) have announced the return of the Kingdom-wide 'Ramadan Season' for a second edition.

Ramadan takes place in the ninth month of the Hijri calendar, and like last year, the 2024 edition of Ramadan Season is set to celebrate Saudi culture, Islamic traditions and local heritage.

With a number of markets, shared community spaces and workshops planned, it is hoped that Ramadan Season 2024 will provide somewhere for families to wander and enjoy post-Iftar, while also providing opportunity for guidance and educational support to young people and visitors, helping them to understand the traditions and significance of the fasting period for Muslims, though various games and community events.

Theme

Ramadan Season 2024 will adopt the theme of "Enlighten Our Nights" or "The Light of Our Night", particularly fitting as the Kingdom comes alive with lanterns, candles and twinkling lights during the Ramadan period, and it also notes that throughout this time, the cities of the nation will come alive in the evenings.

This theme of light also honours the spiritual and literal clarity experienced during the Holy Month, particularly through the practices of fasting and prayer.

Locations

Although post-Iftar celebrations will be taking place in numerous locations across the Kingdom, Ramadan Season 2024 events will be focussed in three locations including Dammam, Jeddah, and Riyadh. Each of these official locations will host a schedule of varying evening celebrations and events, all beginning after the Iftar canon.

According to Instagram, there will be event areas set up at the Dammam waterfront, in Jeddah's historic AlBalad district, and on one of the oldest streets in Riyadh Al-Thumairi Street.

Events

Although a full listing of festivities is yet to be announced, it is expected that Ramadan Season 2024 will include a variety of activities ranging from traditional children's games and play area, live cooking stations and food stalls, alongside souk-style markets. There will also be an area dedicated to creativity, and showcasing the creative works of artists.

Last year Ramadan Season also featured some community sporting events, and a number of live musical performances by local musicians and bands, which we anticipate will also return this year.

It has also been confirmed that there will be either online events, streaming of events or other digital celebrations taking place, however the focus or the way in which these festivities will be featured or showcased online has not been yet clarified.

Community Focus

Ramadan Season aims to promote community spirit through group activities, which will include communal dining experiences such as shared Iftar tables, whilst also welcoming those seeking volunteering opportunities with friends, family or neighbours, perhaps to serve meals and create Iftar tables for the needy.
