What is it that sets Saudi apart as a premier tourist destination? Is it the history and heritage of diverse peoples, going back thousands of years? Or the country’s stunning, otherworldly landscapes? Then again maybe it’s the once-in-a-lifetime experiences to be had in this unique corner of the world.

All these attractions are to be found in and around Ashar Tented Resort, located in the Ashar Valley, deep within the rugged yet spectacular “living museum” of AlUla in the Kingdom’s north-west. The region has emerged as a major cultural draw with its preserved Nabataean tombs, abandoned mud-and-wattle villages, and mysterious rock art, thousands of years old.

It's the kind of location that calls for a stay inspired by tradition, one that fully immerses you in its nature and heritage – and everything in between. But if tented accommodation conjures up images of sleeping bags, showers from jerry cans, and cramped little spaces, there’s a place with some pleasant surprises in store for you: Ashar, a joint venture by the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) and the upscale hospitality firm Habitas.

Specialising in “immersive events and authentic experiences,” Ashar takes glamping to the next level, with king-sized beds, ensuite bathrooms, air conditioning, and decked terraces where you can take in the panoramic views from the comfort of your lounger beneath an umbrella of native trees.

Guests have the choice of three types of accommodation: tents with one or two bedrooms, or a three-bedroom canvas-topped villa – all providing free Wi-Fi. The villas even boast spa tubs in the bathrooms and a private pool, in addition to the larger common swimming pool situated a short walk from all the rooms.

The accent in Ashar is on style and aesthetics rather than ostentation, with a low impact – in line with the aim for sustainability across the AlUla project as a whole. The sandy hue of Ashar’s canvas roofs adapts well to the surrounding environment, and while the interiors provide all the mod cons to be expected in a property of this standard, the traditional Bedouin design elements provide a memorably local ambience.

Following an active day of dune bashing or exploring the fascinating history of AlUla, Ashar is a welcome oasis of calm and relaxation. After a bit of pampering or a deep tissue massage at the spa, it is quite magical to stroll from your tent through the candle-lit walkways to the outdoor dining area and enjoy a meal under the stars, with a fire pit to keep you feeling warm and cosy.

Ashar’s restaurant serves a range of local and international dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with many of the ingredients sourced locally. And a bigger variety of cuisine is on offer at the neighbouring Banyan Tree AlUla, reached by chauffeur-driven electric buggies that are available 24/7. Harrat is a Middle Eastern eatery where you can chill with a shisha and nibble on some delicious mezze, nestled in cushions on a handmade Asian rug. Saffron, Banyan Tree’s Thai restaurant, offers delicious curries prepared by chefs from the south-east Asian country, making every meal, as they put it: “a gastronomical journey and a passionate work of art.”

Yet for all its creature comforts and high-end luxury, Ashar Tented Resort’s singular feature is its position in the heart of AlUla, with the broad windows of every tent and villa looking out on to the surrounding rock formations and sandstone cliffs – a sight that will surely never be forgotten.

Nearby Hegra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the principal city of the kingdom of Nabataea, and its numerous rock-hewn tombs are now famed as Saudi’s answer to Petra in Jordan. And the Old Town, now devoid of inhabitants, is a well-preserved example of Saudi more traditional architecture with its labyrinth of narrow streets. AlUla’s layers of history are still in the process of being excavated, with many extraordinary remains yet to be discovered.

Amr AlMadani, CEO of RCU, describes AlUla as “a global destination that offers visitors unique and authentic experiences as we protect, share, and celebrate our natural and culture.”

Meanwhile, Oliver Ripley, CEO and co-founder of Habitas, describes being inspired by “the people of AlUla and by its natural beauty and heritage.”

He adds: “Travel is an incredible gift to create greater compassion and understanding in the world between different people and cultures. We are grateful to the RCU for the opportunity to create our home here and invite our community to discover the unique history of AlUla, to share unforgettable experiences and adventures, and make new friends that stay with us long after we leave.”

Ashar Tented Resort is recommended as a romantic weekend retreat, a thrilling activity-based family getaway, or a base from which to explore the renowned history and nature of AlUla in considerable style and luxury.
