What is the Jeddah Historic District Rehabilitation Program?
Working towards preserving the past for future generations, this ambitious program is not just about restoring buildings; it's about safeguarding the rich history and soul of Jeddah.
With four key pillars, the Jeddah Historic District Rehabilitation Program aims to; preserve the historic fabric of Jeddah's heritage, revitalise the Al Balad district, promote economic growth in the area and enhance the quality of life for locals.
Preserving History
Some of the historical structures and traditional buildings in Al Balad date back centuries, they tell the story of the city's past, through their unique architectural design. By meticulously restoring these buildings, the program ensures that future generations can appreciate this legacy.
Ensuring that these traditionally designed buildings remain a vital part of Jeddah's heritage, the Jeddah Historic District Rehabilitation Program has already full restored 58 of 233 selected buildings. And 35 of these have now been fully renovated, with several becoming boutique hotels.
Revitalising Al Balad & Enhancing Quality of Life
Through the meticulous restoration and preservation of these traditional and historic buildings in Al Balad, the program aims to further transform the area, and reintroduce it as a vibrant cultural and tourism destination. But it is important to recognise that this program goes beyond tourism; it aims to create a vibrant and welcoming area for residents.
By renovating public squares and restoring historical landmarks, the program fosters a sense of community pride and encourages residents to connect and reconnect with their city's rich history, and with each other. Additionally, transformed buildings will further enhance the community of the AlBalad area, as these renovated buildings will be able to house community centres, event and performance spaces, and art studios, each element further enriching the cultural life of Jeddah and its residents.
Promote Economic Development
The restoration and renovation of the area's traditional buildings, and the use of these buildings as homes and boutique stays, allows for the investment and growth of the local area with hospitality opportunities. And, these restored heritage buildings are already breathing new life into Jeddah's tourism scene. With this influx of new tourism to the area, it will contribute significantly to the city's economy and create new job opportunities.
