Red Sea Film Festival unveils opening gala film as boxing biopic, 'Giant'

Marking the opening of the fifth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival (RSIFF), the opening gala will begin with a presentation and screening of boxing biopic, "Giant." The festival is once again slated to run from December 4 through the 13 in Jeddah's ancient Al Balad district.

This highly anticipated film, directed by Rowan Athale, recounts the compelling and "remarkable journey" of the British-Yemeni boxing legend, Prince Naseem ‘Naz’ Hamed. The RSIFF screening holds particular significance as it marks the picture's official MENA region debut, following its global premiere at the London Film Festival in October.

The cast features Egyptian-British actor Amir El Masry portraying the lead role of Hamed, while the influential Irish boxing trainer, Brendan Ingle, is played by veteran Irish actor Pierce Brosnan. The film's narrative traces Hamed's inspiring trajectory, depicting his rags-to-riches underdog tale from his humble beginnings in Sheffield to his ultimate achievement of becoming a world champion.

Crucially, the movie highlights his success in the face of widespread racism and Islamophobia prevalent in Britain throughout the 1980s and 90s, cementing his status as a "global sporting icon." Adding Hollywood weight to the production, iconic actor and boxing movie veteran Sylvester Stallone serves as one of the film’s executive producers.

The selection of "Giant" aligns with the Red Sea Film Foundation’s mission to celebrate regional success stories and provide a platform for Arab talent. As Faisal Baltyuor, CEO of the Red Sea Film Foundation, previously commented, the choice "embodies an artistic celebration of regional talents who have established their presence on the global film scene," reflecting the powerful and growing force of Arab cinema.
