Malaysia's buzzing capital of Kuala Lumpur is one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic cities, home to a diverse tapestry of cultures and influences.
While its modern airport often serves as a popular transit destination, Kuala Lumpur itself deserves more than just a fleeting layover. The cosmopolitan hub seamlessly blends modernity with tradition, showcasing proud Islamic influences and contemporary architecture and brimming with culinary adventures to be had.
Accessible to Saudi Arabian travellers with direct flights via airlines like Saudia, Air Arabia, Emirates, and Etihad, Kuala Lumpur is a hassle-free destination, with easy visas on arrival for Saudi nationals and Iqama holders. Upon arrival, efficient connections between the airport and city centre, including taxis and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport or KLIA Express train, mean no time for exploring will be wasted. The city offers unique cultural and gastronomic experiences in just 48 hours: here’s how to make the most of two days in this cosmopolitan hub.
Mooch around Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown
I was inspired to visit by videos I spotted on social media, but this is a well-known location frequented by locals and tourists alike, so it is safe to say, Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown is a must-visit destination.
Bursting with culture, shopping and street food, upon entry, a gateway adorned with red lanterns welcomes you, signalling that you’re in the right place. Take your time pursuing the tightly packed stalls, where you’ll find just about everything! Haggling is a must here; embrace it as a fun opportunity to immerse yourself in local culture.
A visit to Chinatown wouldn't be complete without indulging in Malaysia's rich culinary heritage, which is effortlessly woven into the vibrant street scene. Nestled among the bustling stalls, street food vendors tempt passersby with colourful Pattaya smoothies, authentic noodle dishes, potent durian ice cream, and an array of fresh fruits - all perfect for nibbling between purchases.
Asam Laksa is a hidden gem meal worth seeking if you're a noodle enthusiast. Founded in 1968 by a Chinese couple, this unassuming spot is perched under a pink tarpaulin, featuring a handful of mismatched plastic chairs and tables adorned with fragrant sambals. True to its name, their Asam laksa, ladled from a pot of bubbling, steamy goodness, is a symphony of spicy and sour flavours—a delicious testament to why this dish is so deeply cherished.

Visit Kuala Lumpur’s iconic landmark, The Petronas Towers
If you're not too perturbed by heights, the city's iconic landmark, the Petronas Towers, is worth a peek.
Once holding the crown for the world’s tallest buildings, an hour-long tour takes you to Skybridge on the 41st floor, a connection point between the two towers, before ascending to the 86th-floor observation deck. Here, a panoramic view of the whole city is on show, offering a peak at the immensity of Asia’s fastest-growing city. At night, the towers stand illuminated against the dark sky.
For another angle, head to Sky Bar at Traders Hotels or Michelin recognised Marini’s on 57, offering front-row seats to their grandeur.

Dine at a Michelin recognised Hawker, Kedai Kopi Lai Foong
A short walk from Chinatown, Kedai Kopi Lai Foong Restaurant serves up local culture on a platter as a vibrant tribute to Malaysia’s beloved hawker cuisine. Once a modest street stall, it has evolved over the past decade into a two-story establishment. The interiors are simple and unpretentious, with red lanterns hanging from the ceiling and black-and-white tiled floors evoking a charming, diner-like atmosphere.
Recognised by the Michelin Guide, this culinary gem houses an array of vendors offering fragrant beef noodles, pillowy Chinese buns, succulent dumplings and authentic laksa. The atmosphere can be a bit hectic, especially during the lunchtime rush, when professionals flock for a quick portion of cher kuey teow (a stir-fried noodle dish). However, this spot brims with authenticity, making it the perfect place to indulge in a fusion of Malaysian flavours and textures whilst watching the world go by.

Explore Jalan Alor, Kuala Lumpur’s Vibrant Food Street
No trip to Kuala Lumpur is complete without a visit to Jalan Alor, the city’s iconic nighttime food market. This buzzing street comes alive with the energy of hawker-style restaurants and street vendors, exuding a charm comparable to Bangkok’s Khao San Road—sans the overwhelming tourism.
Jalan Alor is a sensory overload, complete with vendors coaxing you to their stalls, pops of neon lights, people walking to and fro and clouds of fragrant smells.. Despite the chaotic vibe, this bustling street epitomises Asian food culture, where families, friends, and couples gather over plates of wok-tossed greens, fresh seafood and hearty noodle dishes.
The restaurants here offer a mixture of Malay, Chinese Thai, and Vietnamese food, but visit Wong Ah Wah Restaurant for an Anthony Bourdian-approved meal. Make sure to tuck into their famous roasted chicken wings and a hearty portion of Hokkien Mee, a flavourful combination of thick yellow noodles stir-fried in rich dark soy sauce with prawns, cabbage and gai lan (Chinese broccoli).
Top Tip: Visit after 4:30pm to experience the market in full swing, but it stays open until around 1am, so you have plenty of time to try an array of authentic dishes at affordable prices.
