How the Kingdom keeps travel blogger Jess Melu coming back for more

We recently sat down with Swiss travel blogger Jess to hear about her unforgettable experiences of the Kingdom, from bustling Riyadh to the ancient wonders of AlUla, Melu's travels have taken her to the shores of the Red Sea and the historic port city of Jeddah.

She shared her insights on the exceptional service, exquisite cuisine, breathtaking landscapes, and diverse activities that made her stay truly remarkable.

How and where did your passion for travel begin?

Fueled by a childhood filled with family vacations thanks to my travel-loving parents, I developed a deep appreciation for exploring new horizons. But it was my first solo trip to Hawaii in 2015, where I spent a few months, that truly transformed my travel style.

This solo adventure was a game-changer. Stepping outside my comfort zone, I embraced the local culture, met incredible people, and embarked on countless adventures that broadened my perspective. Since then, I've had a burning curiosity and a passion for discovering more of the world; to seek out stunning destinations and immerse myself in diverse cultures across the globe.

You have visited the Kingdom several times, which city captivated you the most?

Having crisscrossed the Kingdom, from the heart of Mecca to the ancient wonders of AlUla, I've experienced the warmth of Saudi hospitality in every aspect of my travels, a welcomed cultural immersion. Each visit has offered me a unique window into the country's history and unique culture: Riyadh's pulsating energy and Jeddah's rich history are equally captivating, while the Red Sea's paradise-like beaches are a world unto themselves.

However, it was a road trip that truly unveiled Saudi Arabia's breathtaking diversity. The vast landscapes – from towering deserts and rugged mountains to pristine Red Sea coasts and historical sites – left me awestruck. It was this journey that ignited a love within me for the country's natural beauty, and its AlUla, with its spellbinding landscape that remains a top contender in my books.

While each region holds its own charm, the northwest mountains captured my heart most. The sheer awesomeness of the scenery cast a magical spell, making it a truly unforgettable experience.

Tell us about your recent stay at the St. Regis Red Sea Resort

My stay at the St. Regis Red Sea Resort was nothing short of outstanding.

I had the privilege of experiencing both the overwater and beach villas, each offering a unique charm despite their contrasting styles. Renowned for luxury and impeccable service, the resort truly lived up to its reputation. Everything from the crystal-clear water, perfect for swimming, to the magical sunsets, contributed to a sense of renewal and tranquility. A serene escape, it felt like stepping into a dream, where every detail captivated my senses and blew me away.

The hotel's staff represented a whole host of nationalities, only leading to further enrich my experience. Their enthusiasm and genuine hospitality, evident in their warm smiles, made us feel truly welcome. I enjoyed learning about their home countries and their paths to the Red Sea.

Dining at the resort was another highlight: the consistently high quality of the food was evident in every dish, from casual bites to the unforgettable seven-course meal. Each creation showcased meticulous preparation and stunning presentation.

One activity that truly stood out was the snorkelling trip. While the cool water surprised me initially, the underwater world's beauty was undeniable. This experience fuelled my desire to return during warmer months and fully immerse myself in its wonders.

And, what about your stay at the Six Sense Southern Dunes?

It was truly an unforgettable experience, the serene atmosphere captivated me immediately. From the moment I arrived at the botanical garden, I felt like I entered a different world, and that indescribable, magical feeling stayed me throughout my time.

Besides the exceptional spa treatments, wellness workshops, and biohacking tools, I had a great opportunity to focus on my health and relaxation. The villas were amazing, offering stunning views of the sandy landscape reminiscent of another world. I spent time watching hundreds of camels pass by during sunset, it was an experience I will always remember.

Six Senses Southern Dunes is one of the most beautiful places I have stayed, and I cannot wait to return!

What advice would you give to anyone visiting Saudi Arabia for the first time?

For travellers choosing Saudi Arabia as their next travel destination, they should prepare for a unique and wonderful experience. Saudi hospitality is amazing, and the people are incredibly friendly, and as a woman, I felt safer here than in many other countries, making travel very comfortable, especially since I traveled alone.

I enjoyed the diverse landscapes, rich history, and warm welcome that Saudi Arabia offers. I can fully recommend renting a car and exploring the country!

Are there other destinations you recommend for people to visit this summer?

The ideal summer vacation destinations in 2024 depend on the type of experience the traveler is looking for.

For relaxation and adventure:

The beaches of Indonesia are stunning, and particularly good for a short vacation from Saudi. With lush forests and vibrant culture to explore, the much loved destination of Bali or the other diverse island escapes should be on everyone's list.

Sri Lanka is also an exciting summer destination, offering a mix of serene beaches, historical sites, and wildlife safaris. And Zanzibar is known for its pristine beaches, clear waters, and rich cultural heritage. Namibia is perfect for adventure seekers, with its vast desert, diverse wildlife, and unique landscapes.

For cultural and historical experiences:

Exploring the ancient pyramids in Egypt, taking Nile cruises, and discovering the rich history of Cairo and Luxor.

Jordan is a distinguished destination for exploring culture and heritage, starting with visiting the ancient city of Petra, enjoying the Dead Sea shore, and the beauty of Wadi Rum. Whilst Morocco is suitable for wandering in the bustling markets of Marrakech, taking a trip in the Atlas Mountains, and relaxing on the Atlantic Ocean coast.

Europe also remains a hot and popular destination.
