Saudi Arabia and Portugal have finalised a mutual visa waiver agreement to ease travel logistics for government representatives and special passport holders, streamlining official communication and travel between the two nations.

Under the new travel agreement, individuals holding diplomatic, special, or official passports are exempt from entry visa requirements when traveling between both countries. The agreement marks a practical shift toward closer bilateral engagement, cutting down bureaucratic barriers to facilitate more direct diplomatic contact. According to statements carried by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the agreement is designed to enhance joint coordination and broaden areas of bilateral cooperation across several fields of mutual interest.

Beyond the immediate administrative updates to the visa structures, the ministerial meeting provided an opportunity for extensive discussions regarding broader international and regional developments. His Highness Prince Faisal, Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed gratitude for Portugal's positions on key regional matters, including its official support for peaceful initiatives. The talks also highlighted ongoing cultural and diplomatic collaborations, such as Portugal's hosting of the King Abdullah International Centre for Inter-Religious and Intercultural Dialogue in Lisbon.

The strategic accord follows similar efforts by Saudi Arabia to modernise its visa system and cultivate stronger global partnerships. By prioritising direct communication and reducing bureaucratic barriers for official personnel, both Riyadh and Lisbon have signalled a clear desire to build a more collaborative and enduring partnership over the coming years.

In 2025, Portugal joined Saudi Arabia’s expanding e-visa program, allowing Portuguese citizens to skip embassy visits and apply for their tourist visas through a quick digital process. This seamless travel agreement was rolled out under the "Saudi, Welcome to Arabia" national tourism campaign, which streamlined entry policies to position the Kingdom as one of the world's most accessible destinations. The updated framework also introduces a convenient visa-on-arrival option for travellers of any nationality who hold valid visas or residency from across Europe, UK, or United States, drastically cutting down bureaucratic barriers for European travellers looking to explore Saudi Arabia's heritage sites and new luxury developments.
