Qatar is, quite simply, an excellent place to shop. With glittering designer boutiques, bustling local souqs and family-friendly mega malls, a day out shopping here is as much about the experience as it is about the goods on offer.
The vast majority of shopping centres are in Doha, and here you’ll find malls packed with novelties such as Venetian canals and indoor theme parks, as well as the famous Souq Waqif, with its old-style alleys and traditional goods.
So whether you’re planning to splurge on expensive luxury goods, pick up some local bargains or just have fun soaking up the atmosphere, these are the best places to go shopping in Qatar.
1. Souq Waqif
One of Qatar’s best loved landmarks, Souq Waqif gives visitors to Doha a taste of tradition. Walking through its winding, oud-scented alleys is like stepping back in time as you pass spice stalls, falconers, embroidered fabrics, antiques, and handmade jewellery.
Unlike the city’s modern malls, shopping at Souq Waqif gives the chance to chat with vendors, ask about the local products and even haggle if you feel like it – gentle bargaining can be a memorable part of the souq experience. In the evenings, the souq comes alive with music, street performers, and families strolling through its arcades. Surrounding restaurants and cafés serve authentic Qatari and Levantine cuisine, making this a place where you can easily spend half a day or more immersing yourself in Qatari culture.
2. Villaggio Mall
When it comes to spectacle, Villaggio Mall doesn’t hold back. Modelled on Venice, it comes complete with an indoor canal (yes, you can take an actual gondola ride) and painted blue skies, offering one of the most out-there shopping experiences in the region. But apart from the novelty factor, Villaggio is also one of the best places for luxury shopping in Qatar.
Top-tier global brands such as Prada, Dior and Louis Vuitton can be found along the Via Domo section, and there are also more affordable options like Adidas, H&M, and Sephora. The mall also houses Gondolania, a family-friendly entertainment zone with a bowling alley, arcade, and indoor rollercoasters.
3. Mall of Qatar
Located just outside Doha near Al Rayyan, the Mall of Qatar is a mammoth retail and entertainment centre. With hundreds of stores across three levels, it’s the largest mall in the country, offering a wide range of international brands and regional labels.
One of the most popular malls in Qatar, it’s particularly good for upscale and high-street fashion stores, housing everything from Zara and Mango to Valentino and Armani Exchange. And when you need a break from shopping, you can head to the Oasis, a massive indoor courtyard that has a 360-degree rotating stage that hosts live shows, music performances, and cultural events.
The mall is also home to KidzMondo, Xtremeland, and Novo Cinemas, making it one of the most child-friendly destinations in Qatar. Dining options include fast food, sweet treats and numerous restaurants serving world cuisines.
4. Galleries Lafayette Doha
An outpost of the glamorous French department store, Galleries Lafayette Doha brings a touch of Parisian luxury to the Gulf. Located in the Katara Cultural Village, this three-storey retail destination is the place to go for high-end designer labels, elegant interiors, and up-to-the-minute European fashion collections.
Galleries’ layout is airy and upscale, often featuring artistic installations and displays alongside the luxury goods, and staff are trained to offer personalised styling advice. Animal lovers should note there’s even a luxury Pet Boutique where you can pick up accessories and treats to bring back for any four-legged friends you may have left at home.
5. Ansar Gallery Qatar
For bargains and essentials during your stay in Qatar, Ansar Gallery is the place to go, as this large department store offers everything from home appliances and electronics to clothing, toys, kitchenware, and cosmetics.
There are several outlets across Doha, including a large and convenient branch inside City Center Doha Mall. While you won’t find designer brands (or canals) here, you can expect consistent value for money, and it’s a useful address for travellers who might need to pick up essentials, affordable luggage and inexpensive souvenirs. If you’re on a budget, Ansar Gallery is one of the best places to shop in Qatar without splurging.
6. Msheireb Downtown Doha
Msheireb Downtown Doha is a modern, vibrant district, one of the few places in Doha where you can shop and explore on foot, with plenty of outdoor spaces, coffee shops and restaurants as well as museums and hotels. It’s a great shopping destination too, with interesting, independent boutiques as well as the Msheireb Galleria, an upscale shopping centre. Expect to find high-end international labels here alongside Qatari design and lifestyle brands.
7. Safari Mall Qatar
Safari Mall, located in the Abu Hamour area, is a shopping destination catering mainly to local residents. This multi-level complex includes a full-scale hypermarket, affordable fashion outlets, electronics stores, and a food court that specialises in South Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines.
With low-cost weekly deals, it’s a great place to stop in for groceries, toiletries or other essentials. The mall also hosts frequent events, such as henna painting, drawing and dance events, and cultural celebrations, adding a local flavour to the experience.
8. Doha Festival City
Doha Festival City is one of Qatar’s biggest and best malls. It's home to over 400 shops, including luxury department store Harvey Nichols, as well as smaller boutiques and regional brands. But this mega mall is not just about shopping, it’s also an entertainment hub, home to Angry Birds World entertainment park, Virtuocity, a high-tech gaming and esports venue, and Snow Dunes, a snow park where visitors can enjoy tubing and skiing even in the middle of summer.
