In a historic moment for Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom has been awarded the prestigious honour of hosting the FIFA World Cup 2034. The announcement was made by FIFA on Wednesday December 11, marking a significant milestone for the Kingdom's ambitious Vision 2030.
This landmark decision only further solidifies Saudi Arabia's rapid transformation into a global sports hub. The Kingdom has invested heavily in sports infrastructure and youth development programs, and hosting the World Cup is a testament to its growing influence in the international sports arena.
Saudi's Uncontested Bid for 2034
The Saudi bid was waved through by acclamation during the meeting of Fifa’s 211 national member associations, with no other countries standing as rivals for the position as host nation. To those in the know, it has been clear since November 2023, that the Kingdom was the singular front-runner for host of the FIFA World Cup 2034.
And when the news was confirmed the week, the Kingdom's Minister of Sports, His Excellency Abdulaziz Bin Turki Bin Faisal Al Saud said, “It is a proud day, a day of celebration, a day that we invite the entire world to Saudi Arabia.”
The 2034 World Cup is expected to attract millions of football fans from around the globe. The tournament will showcase Saudi Arabia's rich culture, stunning landscapes, and world-class hospitality, and the Kingdom is committed to delivering a memorable and unforgettable experience for all visitors.
Key Factors of Saudi's Successful Bid
In line with the pillars of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 plans, a massive amount of investment has been made into diversifying the nation's economy, and it is thought that several of these key factors have contributed to Saudi Arabia's successful bid include:
- State-of-the-art infrastructure: The country has invested heavily in building world-class stadiums, training facilities, and transportation networks to accommodate the demands of a global sporting event.
- Easy access for travellers: With numerous direct flights linking the Kingdom with both Europe and Asia, Saudi's central base serves as a middle-ground location for both teams and fans travelling for the tournament and the visa process has been simplified in recent years, with the introduction of e-Visas for example.
- Passionate football fans: Saudi Arabia boasts a passionate and growing football fan base, ensuring a vibrant and enthusiastic atmosphere during the tournament.
- Visionary leadership: The Saudi Arabian government's commitment to sports development and its ambitious Vision 2030 plan have played a crucial role in securing the World Cup bid.

FIFA World Cup 2034 Stadiums & Host Cities
The Kingdom boasts one of the world's most diverse landscapes, home to eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites and groundbreaking giga-projects that offer unique and innovative destinations. The 2034 FIFA World Cup will not only showcase the Kingdom's rich cultural heritage but also leave a lasting legacy, forging new connections and inspiring future generations.
Fifteen cities and destinations across Saudi Arabia have been determined 'host cities and locations' ahead of the 2034 sporting event. With matches set to take place in five cities, ten other destinations in the Kingdom have been nominated as 'host locations' where teams will base themselves for pre-match training and post-event recouping purposes.
The five main cities of Abha, Al Khobar, Jeddah, NEOM and Riyadh have all been given the status as host cities. Whilst destinations such as AlUla, Al Ahsa, Al Baha, Jazan, Taif, Madinah, Tabuk, Hail and Buraidah have all been declared as support cities.
Considerations for FIFA World Cup 2034
Although we are still ten years away from the FIFA World Cup 2034 in Saudi Arabia, there are some pivotal questions being floated across both traditional media and social media - in particular, when will the sporting event take place?
Following tradition, most FIFA World Cup events are held during the summer months, and in the history of the contest, these major events have taken place between the months of June and July. However, these true summer months are some of the hottest in Saudi Arabia, with temperatures often reaching over 40°C, this potentially poses significant challenges for hosting such a major event.
However, precedence may have already been set by neighbouring Qatar.
In 2022, Qatar successfully bid for and hosted the FIFA World Cup. Uniquely, this competition took place during the winter months of November and December, when cooler temperatures allowed for a more enjoyable environment for both players and fans. And with this in mind, we can only presume that serious consideration will be put into the Kingdom potentially hosting another winter FIFA World Cup for 2034.
